Theory: This is what i believe happened. Madara is weaker than his former self so for some reason he needed itachi to get back to his prime. i do not think that he wanted to help itachi from the start because madara killed his own brother why would he help itachi. he tricked itachi into killing his own clan and thinking that he was working with madara. in actuality he was just a pawn. itachi found out he was being used. Things got shaky between the two. madara understood that since itachi knows the truth he cant use him. so his eyes gaze upon another uchiha. seeing that sasuke can be the next vessel he watched his fights. he noticed that when he saw sasuke vs deidara sasuke was too weak to beat itachi. so he weakened itachi before he fought sasuke. the reason he didn't kill itachi was becuase he wanted to make sasuke happy. also if he killed itachi than all the akatsuki members would wonder how he died and whats really going on. this would explain why tobi said if sasuke would be a hawk or stay a snake. i would like to hear some feedback from you guys and i kind of made this in a rush so i didn't review it. sidenote the reason his name is tobi is because he dosent want to people to know hes madara and hees stooped so low that he hides behind akatsuki.

I think it's funny that the god of shinobi-dom said "Gross! creepy crawlies!" That's pretty funny. Continuing omegam's thought, that would be a good reason for Itachi not to tell sasuke. He already killed the clan, so why should he believe him? That's why he brought up that whole "Madara is alive. You believe what you want, but all is not as it you perceive it is" To get the theme of a different reality than was accepted into play. What itachi said before dying may have been the indicator. Continuing into the future, sasuke might have seen zetsu, faked collapsing, then took itachi's body with him and fled. Probably an emotional scene with sasuke burying his brother, that kind of thing.... I really should write fanfic...oh well

I would also like to state that comment #750 and 751, I addressed the issue of kakashi, with infinate sharingan-detailed abilty, not seeing tobi's sharingan.
