at this point of the naruto plot, THE ULTIMATE SECRET THAT REALLY MATTERS IS... the secret of the Sharingan. If Itachi who has the MS was damn surprised that non-Uchiha Kakashi's Sharingan transplant turned into a freakin' MS,too, then it clearly tells us that no one really knows the secret of the Sharingan... except Only perhaps... Madara/Tobi. So the secret of the Sharingan coincides with the secret of the face, no, the hidden eye beneath the mask. (since Itachi clearly said that Madara is well, and so, too, his eyes.) The hidden eye will reveal the true secret of the Sharingan. That's WHAT, in "what lies beneath the mask." imho.

madara is using his body and his eyes as stated clearly by itachi, he wears the mask for him to hide his identity and maybe cos in his fight with the 1st hokage his face was partially damaged! thats how i see it .... last call 4 no alcohol!!!

the cover page says that uchiha madara the founder of the clan knows all possible scenarios... so must know that itachi has a "dark" plan of supplanting him. so he must hide some things not only to the non-akatsukis but also to itachi and the rest who think that they are in the loop.

from my poin of view, every MS is differ one after another look at Itachi and Kakashi MS shape also Madara and his lil bro.

@ 678. we don't know of any event in narutoverse that a sharingan was activated outside an authentic uchiha body. but if the eye is part of the body, which it is, then, yes the sharingan definitely needs an uchiha body(eye) to be activated. though once activated, we know that it could develop into three-tomoed, and then MS, even if the eye resides in a non-Uchiha body. Kakashi being the case in point.

@683 kim, itachi clearly said that madara is well, and so are his eyes. and he also mentioned that madara is an immortal. whatever immortality jutsu he may have used, it sure included regenerative powers that counter the effects of aging (weakening/failure of body functions and eventual death). tsunade is a case in point. she looks young (and perky) because of a regenerative technique, however, she is not yet immortal. she said that her lifespan is shortened because of the jutsu. it madara's case, since his lifespan is infinite, he has the power to regenerate as much as he wants.however, how tsunade got her boobs bigger may be from another jutsu, for that matter.

Hmm maybe Its an Obito body but Madara's souls, like Orochimaru. Remember when he's arms soul was cut down by the god of devil summoned by the 3rd, Orochimaru was really desprerated to find a new Vassel to his body so he ordered the 4 sound nin (one of em is kidoumaru, I forgot the rest), but failed and he released Kimimaro in state of Ill. Sasuke come to Orochimaru but already too late for Orochimaru so he pick another Vassel (shinobi who survived the fights to his freedom, he was promised by Kabuto and Oro for his freedom)!
