No the shield acted on its own because of the Shukaku. It was actually Shukaku protecting Gaara. When Gaara used the sand on its own he used hand seals.

Well, i just want u guys to know that speed beats the sharingan, even though the sharingan knows the next move, the user may not be able to dodge it. The reason why I urge Itachi should not kill his family because it was soo much crossed the limit. Especially, for the people who live in the east side of the world. Well, that sort of makes sense, but it sort of doesn't... if someone knows the next move, most likely (if they are good enough) they'll be able to dodge it... example... when Naruto and Sasuke are fighting, Sasuke's sharingan is good enough that he can dodge Naruto when he's (partly?) Kyuubified (hehe, when he has the jagged stripes and red eyes)... He's ridiculously fast in that form... I know, this can't really compare to Itachi and Gai, but really, think about it, Sasuke isn't near good enough (at that point) to defeat Itachi, while I doubt Naruto could be Gai either... in scale, it's still difficult to determine whether or not Gai's speed alone could defeat Itachi...
